The UN agency for Palestine refugees (UN Relief and Works Agency, UNRWA) launched a program for the distribution of students of the Gaza Strip laptops. All laptops will be 200,000 young Palestinians, according to an official press release. The first OLPC XO laptops will be 2,100 children from the town of Rafah on the border with Egypt. It is expected that students with laptops will be able to continue their education during crisis situations. Using wireless connections, laptops will be able to join the network and connect students and teachers.
By 2012, UNRWA plans to distribute in the Middle East half a million laptops. Partners agencies are fund One Laptop per Child, a charity fund Jordan (JHCO) and the Government of Palestine. Agency UNRWA operates one of the largest systems of educational institutions in the Middle East. The system consists of UNRWA schools in the West Bank and Gaza Strip and in Lebanon, Syria and Jordan. In these schools, free education the children of Palestinian refugees.
Previously, fund OLPS gave a thousand laptops to educational institutions of the Ministry of Education of Palestine, located on the West Bank cities of Ramallah and Nablus. Also, 500 laptops were sent to the UNRWA school in Ramallah.
