Seagate Corporation is developing a hard disk with a capacity of three terabytes. Seagate has introduced the end of the year. Thus, the company's representatives have confirmed unofficial reports of a new drive, writes the British THINQ.

The development is complicated by the fact that many modern computers do not support hard drives larger than 2.1 terabytes. This limitation is a mechanism addressing the data blocks (LBA), developed about 30 years ago.

The total capacity of new titles will be available only in the operating systems that support improved mechanism for addressing - Long LBA. This applies to the 64-bit versions of Windows 7 and Vista, as well as the modified OS based on kernel Linux. Owners of computers with Windows XP will be able to use only 990 gigabytes of three terabytes.

In addition, companies have to refine the mechanism of the partition table, because now the capacity boot drive can not exceed all those same 2.1 terabytes. Without this refinement the new drive can be used only as supplementary, rather than the main disk.

In Seagate noted that to overcome the barrier of 2.1 terabytes require the joint efforts of equipment manufacturers and developers of operating systems. According to company representatives, the infrastructure still ready to support such large drives, only 80 per cent.
